Carrollton TX Cell Phone Car Accident Lawyer

With the cell phone use on the rise across the country (and in Texas), unsurprisingly, more and more cell phone car accident cases are being reported. The numbers stagger the mind.

Consider the following statistics:

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found back in 2005 that 10% of drivers used cell phones or hands-free devices while driving – no doubt that number has gone significantly upwards in the years since.
  • The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) found in a study that truck drivers who text were over 23 times more likely to get into crashes than were truckers who fully attended to the road. The VTTI also found that teens were four times more likely to get into cell phone or texting related crashes than were adult drivers.
  • Talking on or dialing a cell phone is incredibly dangerous – dialing, for instance, increases your likelihood of getting into a crash nearly three times.
  • But nothing comes close to texting while driving. A separate study found that texting while behind the wheel is six times more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol.
  • In 2008, more than 500,000 people got hurt in auto crashes involving some sort of driver distraction.
  • Other studies have found that drivers who text simply do not look at the road nearly as often – a 400% decrease in attention span!

What cell phone use does to drivers

Studies have found that teenagers who chat on the cell phone have severely slowed reaction times. They brake slower, react slower to cars in front of them, and make many more errors of perception than do non-distracted drivers.

A separate study found that nearly 50% of American kids between ages of 12 and 17 report that they have been in a vehicle while a driver texted. A 2007 study conducted by Nationwide Insurance found that, out of pool of 1,200 drivers, 73% talked on a cell phone while driving, while nearly 20% of them text messaged while driving.
