Every year, motorcycle accidents lead to many thousands of fatalities on US roads and injure tens of thousands more. University of Southern California researcher Harry Hurt in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently investigated thousands of motorcycle accidents in the Southern California region and extracted some disturbing conclusions based on statistical analyses.

Some of his findings are below:

  • Around 75% of motorcycle accidents involve a crash with another vehicle – usually a passenger car.
  • Weather is only a factor in 2% of bike accidents.
  • The majority of motorcycle crashes happen at speeds below 30 miles per hour. Only one in every thousand accidents involves speeds of 86 miles per hour or higher.
  • One dominant reason why cars and trucks hit motorcycles is that drivers literally do not see motorcycles in traffic. In other words, these drivers become blind to motorcycles due to the smaller size of the motorcycle or because they are too busy paying attention to other cars and trucks.
  • Roadway defects were to blame in only 2% of accidents in Hurt’s study.
  • A statistically significant number of motorcycle accidents happen at intersections. Motorists often fail to yield the right-of-way to motorcyclists, thus resulting in side impact collisions.

What kinds of damage do injured riders suffer?

The answer depends on a number of factors, including whether or not the rider was wearing a helmet, the speed at which the accident took place, the angle of the collision, and the amount of time that elapsed between the accident and when the rider got medical help.
